The presentation will be followed by a discussion led by Maris Saagpakk, Associate Professor of German Cultural History and Literature at Tallinn University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone is welcome to attend!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conspiracies in 18th-Century Drama: Interrelations between Schiller and Kotzebue<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work of August von Kotzebue remains a compelling subject of study for research into Baltic-German cultural and literary relations. In the late 18th century, Kotzebue was one of the most successful playwrights in the German-speaking world; in terms of the number of performances, he ranked far ahead of Goethe and Schiller. Today, he serves as a prime example of the &#8220;negative canonization&#8221; of an author who engaged in highly productive rivalry with the &#8220;princes of poetry&#8221; from Weimar. He shared a particular interest in historical conspiracies with Schiller. This presentation aims to highlight thematic and structural parallels regarding the adaptation of historical subject matter, drawing on selected examples: Schiller\u2019s plays featuring maritime themes from his later period, Kotzebue\u2019s History of the Pirates (1789), the play Count Benyowsky (1794), and Schiller\u2019s Fiesco (1784).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Verschw\u00f6rungen im Drama des 18. Jahrhunderts. Interrelationen zwischen Schiller und Kotzebue<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">F\u00fcr die Erforschung deutsch-baltischer Kultur- und Literaturbeziehungen bildet August von Kotzebues Werk in Tallinn nach wie vor ein spannendes Forschungsobjekt. Kotzebue geh\u00f6rt am Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts zu den popul\u00e4rsten Dramatikern im deutschsprachigen Raum; gemessen an den Auff\u00fchrungszahlen rangiert er hier weit vor Schiller und Goethe. Heute ist er ein bekanntes Beispiel f\u00fcr die ,Negativkanonisierung\u2018 eines Autors, der in einer \u00fcberaus produktiven Konkurrenz zu den Weimarer \u201eDichterf\u00fcrsten\u201c stand. Insbesondere mit Schiller teilt er das Interesse an historischen Verschw\u00f6rungen.
