Research Library

The research library is located in the city centre at Rävala Avenue 10. The library offers readers ten different reading rooms throughout its three floors.

The shelves of the reading rooms are stacked with reference works, study materials, scientific literature and journals. Reference works and journals are not available for home lending. Books can be perused on the spot as well as loaned for home use. You can borrow a book by going to a circulation desk or using the self-service machines. You can also order books from the stacks to read at the library. A librarian can help you find literature from the shelves or our databases.

Our reading rooms are equipped with computers to search our databases or use word processors and other software, wifi and printers.

You can register to be a patron, make photocopies (on A3 or A4 paper) and print documents at the information desk (materials printed from the reading rooms or study rooms are directed to the information desk printer).

The shelves in the reading room include the most important reference works related to Estonia and the former Baltic provinces, retrospective bibliographies of print in Estonia and reference works on archives, Riigi Teataja (State Gazette) 1918-1940, older dictionaries, encyclopedias and technical dictionaries, reference works and printed catalogues on old prints and rare books, and a new arrivals display.

The room also has a microfilm reader.

The room is located in the C-corpus of the research library (to the right at the end of the lobby).

The room includes reference works in philosophy, study materials, scientific literature and journals as well as part of the Müllerson collection.
Reference works and journals are not available for home lending. You can borrow books using the self-service machine in the lobby.

The shelves of the room include encyclopedias, language dictionaries, biographical dictionaries, bibliographies and other general reference books. The books in this room are only available for use in the library.

The seminar room seats 42 people and can be booked to organise seminars and other events. Read more on the seminar room Uno.

The self-service machine is located at the end of the research library lobby. You can use the machine to borrow books from the open shelves as well as return any books you have borrowed.

The museum room of the Centre of Early Printed Books is located at the end of the I floor lobby of the research library. The museum room hosts lectures on early printed books. You can also order lectures, workshops etc from our specialists.

The book shop in the research library lobby stocks a large number of copies of old books and magazines that the library does not need anymore. We have fictional works as well as books on philosophy, history, literature and linguistics and books from the Soviet era. The selection at the shop changes regularly.

The price for  books is €0.50.

The cafe Oaas Catering OÜ at the end of the lobby is open to everyone.

The menu includes daily specials, salads, sandwiches, pies and delicious desserts.

 

The research library lobby also functions as a gallery for art and book exhibitions.

 

Research Library II floor

The reading room includes reference works, study materials, scientific literature and journals in the following fields:

The room also has a self-service printer-scanner-copy machine.

The room also has a PHILIPS 2K (2560×1440) 32″ monitor. In order to retain the high resolution, you have to use a HDMI cable to attach the monitor to your personal laptop. The monitor comes with a keyboard and a mouse.

The New Arrivals display displays the newest books that have arrived at the library. The books can be placed on hold to borrow later.

You can use the self-service machine to borrow books from the open shelves as well as return any books you have borrowed.

The II floor lounge is used to display art exhibits.

Research Library III floor

For reading at the library we have:

  • issues of the past 3 years of over 200 Estonian magazines and journals;
  • over 200 Estonian daily, weekly, county and city newspaper of the past year.

The Expatriate Estonian Literature Centre collects, preserves and provides access to printed literature by and about expatriate Estonians from 1944 onwards, in Estonian as well as other languages.

The room includes newspapers and books.

Outside the research library on the side facing Solaris, there is a 24/7 self check-in machine you can use to return books. You do not need your ID or library card to return books. You can return all TLU Academic Library books through the self check-in machine (incl books from the study centre and other branches).
